Jail Doors and Old Jail Building

Jail Doors

The old jail was put in use in 1913.  It had two floors, 1st floor was the office and jail, and the second floor was where the jailer lived. In 1940 the second floor burned.  That portion was removed and the first floor kept as a jail until 1970 when the building was condemned.

Burke Arts Council moved in the jail in 1977.  They now have a great building on South Sterling Street just before the railroad tracks that is helping to revive the south side of town!

  • The 3 jail doors were saved from the demolition
  • A concrete joint line denotes the outline of the buildings footprint is located here
  • The footprint is further defined by the concrete seat walls and outside stone walls with railing
Concrete joint outline

The concrete joint outline of the original footprint of the old jail sits near the new amphitheater stage.
