Downtown Tax District

Morganton has had the Special Downtown Tax District since 1982 when the City Council created the Main Street Department and the Main Street Program. Revenue raised via the Special Downtown Tax District funds about 25% of the Main Street Department budget. The remainder of the department’s budget is funded via General Fund Revenues.

The Special Downtown Tax District covers a 38-block area in downtown Morganton and is overseen by the Main Street Department. The tax rate for the Special Downtown Tax District is currently $0.12 cent per $100 valuation. The City Council approves the tax rate when it approves the city budget.
